Yoga for Complete Beginners: Where to Start

📅 April 10, 2026 ⏱️ 6 min read ✍️ Sarah Mitchell

So you've decided to try yoga. Congratulations! You're about to embark on a journey that can transform not just your body, but your entire relationship with yourself. But let's be honest — starting anything new can feel intimidating. All those Instagram yogis bending into pretzels while you're wondering if you can even touch your toes.

First Things First: You Don't Need to Be Flexible

This is the #1 myth that keeps people away from yoga. Yoga is not about touching your toes or standing on your head. It's about meeting yourself exactly where you are and growing from there. Flexibility is a result of yoga, not a prerequisite.

The beauty of yoga is that it meets you wherever you are. There is no "too stiff," no "too old," no "not athletic enough." — Our founder, Anna

What You'll Need

You genuinely don't need much to start. A yoga mat (even a towel works at first), comfortable clothing you can move in, and an open mind. That's it. No fancy props, no expensive outfits, no prior experience.

5 Poses to Learn First

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana) — The foundation of all standing poses. Stand tall, feet together, arms by your sides. Feel the ground beneath you and the sky above. Breathe.

2. Child's Pose (Balasana) — Your safe space. Kneel, sit back on your heels, and fold forward with arms stretched out. Rest here anytime you need a break.

3. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) — The most recognized yoga pose. Hands and feet on the mat, hips lifted high. It builds strength and stretches your entire back body.

4. Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) — On hands and knees, alternate between arching and rounding your spine. This gentle flow warms up your spine and connects movement to breath.

5. Corpse Pose (Savasana) — Lie flat on your back, arms relaxed, palms up. This is where the magic of integration happens. Don't skip it!

Tips for Your First Class

Arrive 10 minutes early. Tell the instructor you're new. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Take breaks whenever you need them. And remember — every single person in that room was once a beginner too.
